Terraced Living
One of Toronto's most unique and exciting projects seems to have been completed. A fully lit up penthouse unit seems to attest to that. That project is 155 Cumberland/130 Bloor. Initially 130 Bloor was a 14 storey building built in 1960 by the Bronfman family. The first 12 floors were office space with the top two floors occupied by a spectacular modern penthouse apartment owned by Noah & Rose Torno. When the Torno's passed away the unit was left empty.
In 2005 the building was purchased by KingStreet Capital, a Toronto-based real estate investment firm. Shortly after the city placed the Torno Suite on its Inventory of Heritage Properties. As such KingStreet decided to build upwards while retaining the existing Torno Suite. The first 10 floors were to remain as office space, floors 11-12 were to be turned into condos with 6 new floors to be added above the Torno Suite. A potentially crazy idea but it seems to have worked. Designed by Quadrangle, this most certainly must have been one difficult job - adding 6 floors to a functioning 50 year old office building all the while not touching the amazing penthouse.
