East Africa Project beneficiary
A beneficiary of the INBAR's East Africa Bamboo Project shows his new bamboo chair. The East Africa Bamboo Project is supervised by INBAR, implemented by UNIDO, and funded by CFC. The project works to develop sustainable bamboo-based businesses in Ethiopia and Kenya, and is supported by the governments of both countries. In 2008 the project trained over 700 people in bamboo cultivation, product development and innovation, produced a range of technical manuals and guides in English, Amharic and Swahili, completed testing the Ethiopian lowland and highland bamboos for suitability for use as laminated floorboards and charcoal, ran an national bamboo trade fair, a “BAMFAIR”, in Kenya to promote product marketing, and helped farmers and relevant government ministries plant thousands of new bamboos as a prelude to diversifying the range of bamboo available to producers.
